If there is one absolutely vital piece of growing a garden, it is doing a soil test. This post contains affiliate links and is brought to you by RX Soil.

All opinions are my own. Full disclosure can be found here. A proper soil test will act as a guide to reveal your soil organic matter, any severe nutrient deficiencies, PH level, and show its ability to retain nutrients. Not only does a soil test show soil deficiencies but it will also show excesses of specific nutrients.

If you were to fertilize blindly, without a soil test, you could easily make these excesses worse and cause toxicities and nutrient imbalances in your garden. There are costs associated with buying seeds, buying transplants, purchasing compost, and maybe even soil, but too often the soil is not tested before getting started.

Failure to test soil and implement the results can lead to crop failures across your entire garden. Thus wasting all your time and effort you put into the set up. A professional lab test soil test and results do cost money, but you will recoup the cost and save even more money in the end with a bountiful harvest.

And even if you have had a garden for years, you should be testing your soil at least once a year. You are legitimately throwing your money in the trash.

No one is going to get a good soil test result by using a pinch of soil and trying to read the color of the water. It may have a low cost or even be free but speaking from experience, it was not worth it.

My extension only took dry soil samples, making it so I had to wait a few weeks for the soil sample to dry indoors. Then I had to drive over an hour round trip to drop it off, and finally to top it all off, I waited for another month for the results.

My Cooperative Extension would only give recommendations for amendments that were conventional and I was organically gardening.

It was such a pain and hassle overall. The BEST professional soil test kit is made by RX Soil. RX Soil uses a professional laboratory, Waypoint, for testing that does testing day in and day out and is incredibly accurate.

The RX Soil kit makes it so testing is both professionally done and easy! The RX Soil kit ships you a provided box, a prepaid shipping label, a bag for soil, and easy to follow instructions. Once the results are complete, an email is sent to you with your results.

Another favorite part of the test is that when the results are received, they customize the fertilizer application rates to the size of the garden you have. I also have a coupon code for you! After you go through the process of checking out and creating an account, if you are performing a nutrient test, they will ask you some basic questions about what type of soil you are sending.

And preference for recommended products? Conventional or Organic FYI having an organic option is a game changer!! Another tip: You want to make sure you actually have soil in the test. The place I had taken it to, sent me a note saying add more actual soil next time.

Rookie mistake. You the actual cost of the soil test analysis fee is included in the purchase of the test kit. RX Soil gives you recommendations as to how to correct your soil and get it in the proper balance. The results here are easy to read, separated by color, green is optimum level, red is very low level, and the green, yellow, orange spectrum is everything in between.

The numbers are there for you to read, and the optimal range listed below each macro and micro nutrient. That is part of what makes Rx Soil so great. But at the same time gives you the professional results you need. By the way, all test results are in one easy to find location on Rx Soil and can be compared year over year.

But you might want to call ahead of time to be sure it takes in-person drop-offs. The second drawback ties directly into the time delay. Murphy said you can still and more effectively find out the correct amount of nitrogen fertilizer to add based on the plants you are going to grow, the time of year, growth stages of the plant, and the weather for example, if you experience a lot of heavy rain, it could wash out the nitrogen.

Combined, this information provides a formula for lawns. Rutgers calculated this ratio for me in its report, and it offers a fertilizer finder site that links required nutrients with commercially available fertilizers in New Jersey. A conversation with a representative from your local extension office will most likely yield similarly specific solutions.

When it comes to testing your soil, it may be a good idea to consider lead and other heavy metals, especially if you live in a historically industrial area or in an old building where lead paint might have fallen into the soil.

Luster Leaf is the big name in soil-test kits. But we found the Luster Leaf Professional Soil Kit and the Luster Leaf Professional Soil Test Kit a bit easier to use. Although these models are similar, the has more versions of each test: two extra test tubes, and a special soil-filtering device.

When we unboxed kits from Flinn Scientific and Rapitest , we found that they were clearly labeled Luster Leaf kits the and , respectively. Holbein told me that Rapitest is a brand under Luster Leaf that the company sells to other parties, including Flinn Scientific.

The results of the nitrogen and phosphorus tests showed up clearly and correctly during our control trial. But in all other respects, we had the same issues with the Mosser Lee kit as we had with the others.

Cores from ornamental or vegetable gardens should reach 6 to 8 inch depths. Make sure to remove the grass blades, stems, thatch and other organic matter from the core.

Trees and shrubs feed heavily where the outermost canopies drip rain and dew to the ground, so take soil cores there. Work when soil is dry enough to crumble easily in your hand, so soil cores mix uniformly for your final soil sample.

A soil probe or core sampler designed for sampling soil is easy to use; simply insert it into soil and retrieve your core. A simple garden spade or trowel works, too. Well-cleaned stainless steel is ideal. Avoid using a brass, bronze or galvanized utensil, as the copper or zinc can contaminate results.

Use a clean plastic or stainless bucket for mixing soil cores. So be specific, and don't skimp. For example, tell the lab if you're starting new grass or specialty crops; the recommendations will vary significantly. If you suspect nutrient deficiencies around sickly shrubs, pass that information on, along with the shrub names.

For guidance on healthy, established lawns, ask for routine nutrient and liming recommendations. Also let the lab know the species of grass you are growing along with your irrigation habits and whether you bag your clippings or let them lie.

Results from accurate soil samples reveal whether soil nutrients are low, high or sufficient for your plans. Soil pH, confirmed as part of your test, is especially important because it influences the availability of existing and added nutrients.

Results show soil textures, too, as well as percentages of organic matter, which affect water and nutrient retention. Test results also recommend adjustments to correct problems or enhance soil fertility.

These include specific fertilizer ratios your lawn needs or soil amendments, such as lime or sulfur to adjust soil pH and make nutrients more available. Recommendations also outline how much of each to apply for your soil's specific texture, and whether to apply once or stagger applications at specified intervals.

They'll also cover additions of organic matter to gardens and bedding areas. With test results based on proper soil samples and detailed information, you can implement recommendations with confidence.

When you know the condition of your soil from the start, you can give your lawn or garden exactly what it needs moving forward. All Products. Grass Seed. How to Take an Accurate Soil Sample.

Here are five steps to take an accurate soil sample: Get Plans In Hand Understand Sample Requirements Take Accurate Samples Maximize Your Paperwork Interpret Your Results Get Plans In Hand Soil testing can be done any time your soil isn't frozen or overly wet.

Understand Sample Requirements An accurate soil sample is composed of multiple, smaller samples called cores. The remaining 14 are obtained from soil but may need to be supplemented with fertilizers or organic materials such as compost. Nutrient availability in soils is a function of several factors including soil texture loam, loamy sand, silt loam , organic matter content and pH.

Clay particles and organic matter in soils are chemically reactive and will hold and slowly release nutrient ions that can be used by plants. Sandy soils in Minnesota are also more prone to nutrient losses through leaching, as water carries nutrients such as nitrogen, potassium or sulfur below the root zone where plants can no longer access them.

Soil pH is the degree of alkalinity or acidity of soils. When pH is too low or too high, chemical reactions can alter the nutrient availability and biological activity in soils.

Most fruits and vegetables grow best when soil pH is slightly acidic to neutral, or between 5. There are some exceptions; blueberries, for example, require a low pH 4. Soil pH can be modified using materials like lime ground limestone to raise pH or elemental sulfur to lower pH.

In general, most Minnesota soils have enough calcium, magnesium, sulfur and micronutrients to support healthy plant growth. Nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium are the nutrients most likely to be deficient and should be supplemented with fertilizers for optimum plant growth.

The best method for assessing nutrient availability in your garden is to do a soil test. The analysis will also come with a basic interpretation of results and provide recommendations for fertilizing. There are many options for fertilizers and sometimes the choices may seem overwhelming. The most important thing to remember is that plants take up nutrients in the form of ions, and the source of those ions is not a factor in plant nutrition.

The fertilizer you choose should be based primarily on soil test results and plant needs, both in terms of nutrients and speed of delivery. All commercially available fertilizers have what is called a guaranteed analysis , meaning the percent of each major nutrient, by weight, in the fertilizer must be listed on the package as N-P-K.

For example, 10 pounds of tomato food fertilizer contains 1. Many garden fertilizers contain additional nutrients. Inorganic fertilizers generally list all nutrients on the label, organic fertilizers often contain a wide array of plant nutrients and may not list them all.

If you cannot find a fertilizer with the exact N-P-K ratio that is recommended by your soil test report, you should select a product with a ratio that most closely matches.

Note that a fertilizer has a ratio of nutrients that is , meaning that for every 1 pound of N, there are 2 pounds of P 2 O 5 and 1 pound of K 2 O. Regardless of which fertilizers you choose, consider adding additional organic materials to support overall soil health.

Carbon-based materials such as organic fertilizers, compost, grass clippings or cover crops provide a range of benefits to both plants and soil.

And when paired with foods high in vitamin C — like broccoli and tomatoes — beans can help increase iron absorption. In addition, these small bites of protein are fiber-rich, making you feel full and satisfied.

We love beans because there are so many different varieties to choose from. Next time you make hummus , experiment with cannellini beans or black beans instead of chickpeas. Navy beans make superb additions to chilis and stews, and Great Northerns add heft to salads. Beans are also great for thickening soups when mashed and hefty enough to use in veggie burgers.

The healthiest choice for our bodies is to buy fresh vegetables as close to harvesting as possible. But if you've been to a farmer's market lately, you know how expensive that can be.

Now is the perfect time to give canned vegetables a try. Depending on age and gender, the USDA recommends that adults consume 2 to 4 cups of vegetables per day as part of a healthy diet. Canned vegetables help you reach those recommendations by allowing you to always have vegetables within arm's reach.

Plus, you'll be able to worry less about what veggies to serve with dinner when you've got a pantry full of canned vegetables. Corn, peas, carrots, and green beans regularly top lists of popular canned vegetables. Toss some corn into zesty cowboy caviar , brighten a kale salad with carrots, or use peas as a last-minute addition to fried rice.

Green beans add a nutritious touch to soups and don't even consider substituting them for fresh in green bean casserole. Admittingly, canning can affect the flavor and texture of certain vegetables.

If that's the case, try leveling up those canned veggies by roasting them in a hot oven with olive oil and salt. If you've ever anguished over the discovery of spoiled spuds in your kitchen drawer, give canned potatoes a try.

They can easily be substituted for fresh ones, whether a recipe calls for baking, broiling, or frying. Plus, canned potatoes come already peeled and cooked for you , saving you the hassle of having to prep them.

The best part? You can buy them sliced or whole, giving you more cooking options and saving you even more time. You and your wallet will love how easy canned potatoes are to use instead of fresh ones.

You can eat them straight from the can, although we recommend applying seasonings and heat first. During the holidays, canned sweet potatoes are a lifesaver and make the best candied side dish.

Drain and empty the sweet potatoes into a small baking dish. Dab with a generous amount of butter, sprinkle with brown sugar, salt, and vanilla, then bake at degrees Fahrenheit until bubbly and heated through.

Use canned potatoes to make the fastest, easiest potato salad ever. Or, pan-fry them in olive oil and garlic when you're at a loss for a tasty side dish. Give them a try. We're confident they'll soon become a staple in your pantry. One of the most versatile shelf-stable foods, canned tomatoes are a pantry essential.

They're easy to cook with, preserved at their prime, and just as nutritious as fresh. Their concentrated flavor, bright color, and juiciness make them great for pasta dishes, soups, and warming stews. You can use them in everything from marinara sauce and eggplant Parmesan to jambalaya and chili.

Don't get us wrong, fresh tomatoes rock our world, but the sweetest, most succulent ones are only available during summer. And while you wouldn't put canned tomatoes on a salad, they're perfect for quick sauces, curries, and chilis.

Thanks to canned tomatoes, you can enjoy the bright flavor of tomatoes all year long. Many different brands of canned tomatoes are available and come in all sorts of forms. Whether diced, crushed, or whole, canned tomatoes can be used in everything from simple sauces to heartier dishes like chicken cacciatore.

Plus, according to Healthline , tomatoes are a terrific source of the antioxidant lycopene, which is associated with a lower risk of illnesses like heart disease and certain cancers. Picked at peak ripeness, canned fruit lets you enjoy seasonal fruit, like peaches and pears, throughout the year.

Look for fruit packed in juice with no artificial color, and serve canned fruit as is, over yogurt, blended into a smoothie, or over pancakes. Canned fruit can also be used in baked goods. If you're a baker, you know the secret to any good carrot cake is canned, crushed pineapple.

Prefer drinking over baking? Swap your sweetener for canned fruit in your next cocktail. Muddle some canned peaches into your next Old Fashioned for a tantalizing, fruity beverage that will leave you warm and cozy. One of our favorite canned fruits is pumpkin.

It's a phenomenal product to always have on hand in your pantry, and if you've ever tried making pumpkin purée from scratch, you likely agree. It has virtually no fat, sodium, or added sugar, and despite popular belief, you can use canned pumpkin for more than just pie.

Pumpkin adds sweet wholesomeness to banana bread and turns pancakes into moist, flavorful breakfast yumminess. Tuna from a can is high in protein, low in fat, and a great source of healthy omega-3 essential fatty acids.

The American Heart Association and the Dietary Guidelines for Americans recommend that adults eat two 3. But for many people who don't live near the ocean, fresh fish isn't readily available.

Canned tuna allows them to include fish in their diets easily — and cheaply. Tuna fish is one of the most popular canned food items out there.

Undoubtedly, a can of tuna is sitting in almost everyone's kitchen pantry. And while it's great for making quick lunch sandwiches, there are many other creative ways to use this healthful protein.

Pop open a tin of tuna and mix it into a hot, baked, cheesy casserole that feeds crowds. Or, dress up pasta with tuna chunks, olives, and feta cheese for a Mediterranean-inspired meal.

Our favorite way to use canned tuna? Blended with herbs, seasonings, and eggs, then rolled in breadcrumbs, these tender tuna cakes will turn "Fish Friday" into your family's favorite day of the week.

When cooler weather rolls around, you'll be glad you stocked up on canned soups. They're quick to prepare and can be easily customized to your tastes by adding other ingredients, like noodles, vegetables, or beans.

Canned soups get a bad rap for being high in sodium and made with thickeners high in fat and calories, like egg yolks, cream, and cornstarch. We don't deny this, so look for soups labeled low or reduced sodium, low-fat, and organic.

Stick to tomato, lentil, and vegetable soups while veering away from creamy chowders and bisques. You'll enjoy a comforting, nutritious meal while staying hydrated if you make good choices.

Pro tip: If you're not yet sold on canned soup, view it as a starting point. Try adding spices, pressed garlic, or fresh herbs. Or, stir in a handful of shredded cheese, leftover rice, or fresh protein, like tofu or shredded chicken.

Our favorite add-in? Swirled into almost any canned soup, pesto adds a dimension of flavor that's hard to beat. Making chili from scratch has a level of enjoyment and satisfaction. But if you're short on time, canned chili is a delicious, affordable alternative.

It's a meal-in-a-can perfect for a busy weeknight dinner. You can serve canned chili in various ways, including straight from the can. Enjoy it warmed up with cornbread or smothered over a steaming baked potato, crisp nachos, or golden french fries. If it needs some pizazz, add homemade chili seasoning to give it the upgrade you want.

Remember, chili also makes a superb, satisfying filling for tacos, burritos, and hollowed bell peppers. If canned chili on its own doesn't float your boat, use it as a base and add fresh ingredients — like cilantro and jalapeño — for bright flavor. Or, sauté those green peppers in your vegetable drawer that have been creeping past their prime, then mix them into canned chili for some serious crunch.

With a few simple additions, you'll have a nourishing weeknight meal that tastes homemade. There are many canned chili options for all sorts of diets: vegetarian, meat, and no-bean, to name a few.

As with other canned items, consider buying low-sodium. We get it. Canned luncheon meat isn't for everyone.

Low-cost menu choices

Low-cost menu choices

Many people order seafood in restaurants because it's perceived as a higher value, healthier choice than other proteins. We think that seafood is better quality, more exclusive and therefore worth the expense. Sometimes this is true, but sometimes, seafood is just another menu budget buster.

We'd not only expect that, we'd pay it. Then, you have the issue of quality. Maryland crab cakes are delicious, but "Maryland-style" crab cakes mean those crustaceans hale from another, less exclusive locale though you'll pay a Chesapeake Bay price.

Another example where you might not get what you're paying for is a seafood medley or fruits de mer fruits of the sea dish. Your shellfish -- shrimp, lobsters, mussels, oysters and clams -- are your high dollar items, but you'll probably also have other swimmers mixed in to give the dish quantity and help the restaurant manage raw food costs.

So, what do you do if you want to enjoy some good quality seafood? Ask where it's from. If you want shellfish, order the lobster, mussels or clams and leave the other fruits de mer out at sea.

Whether it's the Blue Plate Special or the Chef's Special, almost all restaurants have that limited-time- only dish. But is this a truly unique dish from a creative chef, a pricing scam or something the kitchen need to get rid of before it expires?

The answer could be all three. A daily special is often a way for the chef to get creative, and spice up the menu for the restaurant's regular diners. But, it can also be a way to establish a pricing structure and manage diners' perceptions.

Specials can also be ways to get rid of surplus. If the salmon is not moving quickly enough, it may end up as a "Salmon Surprise" that week. Additionally, if that particular restaurant does catering or hosts special events, they may have leftovers they need to use.

Specials also give restaurants pricing flexibility. Specials are a temporary item on the menu, if they're listed at all, so the chef can change prices based on changing costs or low sales.

To avoid busting your budget on a daily special, ask some questions about the preparation to help determine how special things really are. Once upon a time, desserts were a way for restaurants to make easy money. But, with the popularity of the pastry chef today, every fine dining restaurant in town features signature desserts, complex tarts and labor-intensive delicacies.

So, if you want a little value for your dollar, order the dessert and watch the restaurant work for it. Breakfast is a favorite pastime, especially on the weekends. But, unless you order the omelet stuffed with crab and lobster, you're probably spending too much.

How do most people begin their breakfast? With a cup of joe. The mark-up is about percent and a profitable item for a restaurant, regardless of refills. And, we're not even discussing the skinny, soy-milk, and whipped cream specialty coffees. Orange juice isn't much different.

Imagine a 64 ounce 1. You don't have to be a math genius to know this is a triple digit markup. On to the food: The majority of breakfast items like pancakes and egg dishes are highly profitable and cheap to make.

Syrup, especially if it's a fancy specialty, may be the costliest part of your meal. Omelets are no different. Bacon, ham, turkey, peppers, tomatoes -- regardless of the type or style are still very inexpensive ingredients and unless specified, fairly generic and purchased in bulk.

In other words, don't expect gourmet mushrooms or organic tomatoes in that omelet. With appetizers and side dishes, restaurant-goers have a hard time determining a good value. Subsequently, these items are more profitable for the establishment. The entrée is your main focus and that's what sets the standard.

Jody Pennette, the founder of CB5 Restaurant Group, told Forbes in October that the prices on appetizers and side dishes had increased disproportionately to the raw food costs of these items. This gives restaurants a nice cash cow. Another trick of the trade -- use mysterious ingredients that your average person doesn't eat or use.

If you don't cook with lavender, use truffles or Beluga caviar in your recipes, you won't know what they should cost. The presence of that exotic element in your appetizer or side dish justifies the higher price, regardless of the quantity or quality used in the recipe. So, skip the appetizer or extra side dish, and not only for cost reasons.

Ordering them leaves you less likely to finish your entrée. That's leaving money on the table. Another thing leaving money on the table? Most people enjoy pasta , and what's not to love? It's filling, it's tasty, it works with seafood, meat or primavera and it's one of the more affordable items on the restaurant menu.

But appearances can be deceiving. Earlier we mentioned that food costs average between 30 and 42 percent of menu prices, average being the operative word. Pasta, for example, brings that number down which is why restaurant owners love you to choose the penne over the beef.

Pasta costs around 18 percent of menu price, so restaurants can make a killing. Even served with shrimp, veal or fancy mushrooms, there is still a nice profit margin factored into most pasta dishes.

So, if pasta is a restaurant rip-off, what should you order? According to Clark Wolfe, a restaurant consultant from New York in a Forbes article, "Choose labor-intensive, time-consuming complex dishes that call for hard-to-find ingredients.

Wolfe added, "If you can whip it up yourself in 20 minutes with stuff from your kitchen cupboard -- do that. In other words, go hard or go home.

And we think that especially applies to the next item on our list. If you're familiar with comic strips, you know Popeye, the spinach-eating sailorman.

One of Popeye's friends, Wimpy, was a bit of a mooch with an insatiable appetite for hamburgers. Today's restaurant patrons are no different. However, the new gourmet burgers are enough to make anyone, including Wimpy, reconsider his options.

But, today's restaurants have found ways to spice up the standard hamburger, and in doing so, command a higher price tag. Chefs add unique burger toppings like foie gras, special mushrooms or truffles; stuff patties with lobster or gruyere cheese or make them with Kobe beef, ostrich, or salmon.

Spices and spreads like pesto, curry or wasabi are other ways to jazz up this standard fare. In the minds of customers, this also elevates the burger from the sandwich category into fine dining. But, with these sophisticated ingredients, you get a very small portion relative to the price.

How many truffles fit on a burger? How much wasabi do you need on the bun? Do a few lobster pieces justify the cost? To avoid this budget buster, stick to your good, old-fashioned burger. You may not feel as classy, but you'll get a better bang for your buck and still love the taste.

People would expect New York City to have some of the more expensive restaurants in the world, and it doesn't disappoint.

In April , Masa, a Japanese and sushi restaurant in Manhattan's Columbus Circle, was ranked as the most expensive NYC restaurant. So after all that, would the best deal be some good old-fashioned Chinese food from the local takeout place? Yes and no. International is another area where prices can be deceiving.

Looking at Japanese fare, most would say sushi is worth the price. It has low food costs but high labor. After all, it takes talent and time to make the rolls; most people can't do this at home. So, when you get your 4 to 6 ounces to grams of soybeans, remember that it cost the restaurant about 50 cents in food and labor.

If you love Chinese food, chicken-fried rice is probably on that list. Assume any restaurant is buying eggs, rice and oil in bulk. A beloved Hong Kong dish with approximately one billion variations, this soup—which relies heavily on fridge and pantry staples—is meant to be a little sweet and a touch sharp.

Its silky texture comes from blended potatoes and broccoli stalks rather than heavy cream. Well, this is the salad version, with noodles in addition to pink radishes , orange carrots, purple cabbage, and green cucumbers. One head of cabbage goes a long way. This recipe, where wedges are bathed in turmeric-accented coconut milk until meltingly tender and sweet, uses just half of one to feed four.

The soul of this recipe comes from the ginger and tamari marinade that gives crispy tofu a sweet and savory glaze. We like to turn leftover tofu into tacos, for some Japanese-Mexican fusion. Toss roasted sweet potato wedges in a sweet and nutty tahini dressing for this quick vegetarian weeknight dinner.

And no, it will not break the bank. This budget meal is about turning leftover side dishes into something totally new.

Nearly any roasted vegetable or cooked grain could be worked into a frittata using this method. This looks like something that took hours in a crockpot to make, but in reality, the black-eyed peas soak up the flavors of an onion- and tomato-based gravy in under 30 minutes.

Tuna salad deserves to be considered a dinner dish, not just a sandwich filling. Let the pan-fried chickpeas and red endive in this recipe convince you. Pan-crisped and glazed sweet potatoes. With hearty, almost meaty lentils. And pistachios. Purchase lasagna noodles, mushrooms, mozzarella, and Parmesan.

The rest of the ingredients for this cheap dinner recipe are already in your fridge or pantry. One style of cheap meals: recipes chosen with their leftovers in mind , making two meals out of one.

For example, these ground beef meatballs and their tomato sauce make for a great hoagie filling the next day. If you've already got miso in your fridge and don't want to spend on something new, you could use that in this stew recipe instead of gochujang.

It will be a whole different vibe, but a vibe nonetheless. Serve it with a poached egg and a slice of bread for a good cheap meal. Easy homemade tomato soup is an upgrade to the canned stuff, but we don't judge. Try pouring the soup directly over the sliced sandwich for an irresistible comfort food.

Consider this roast chicken your Sunday dinner. And then your Monday lunch, too. You can turn the leftover meat into pulled chicken sandwiches or a chicken noodle salad. Do not underestimate the potential of the often underrated legume, the lentil, a key ingredient when it comes to filling but cheap meals.

Our creamy, almost Alfredo pasta -looking stovetop mac and cheese is about as easy as opening one of those little boxes of shells and powdered sauce —but a lot more delicious.

Freeze half of these burgers to pull out during those times when you get the craving for fast food. Just add heat; you already paid. Here are our favorite ways to prove that a cheap meal can also be the best meal.
